Today, we joined a
CSA! It's brand new and I think we might have been their very first customers. They had their open house today, but the local paper couldn't get an article in until next week, so I really hope business picks up for them then. A lot of people here haven't even heard of a CSA before, which I thought was strange, since this is mostly a farming community. I really hope that the idea of a local, sustainable, organic farm appeals to people who are used to commercial farming. I think that farms like this really benefit a community and do a lot to teach kids about where food comes from.
I'm not a very adventurous eater, but I'm trying to broaden my horizons and I think that this is one way to make sure that I at least try a bigger variety of veggies. Today, for instance, I tried radishes for the very first time. Not my favorite, but not bad. We signed up for a half share, since it's just the two of us. I think we'll have plenty! And I love the baskets that they gave us to take our share home in! The farmer's husband made them. I think they're darling.
They gave us a tour of the farm and then fed us the best rhubarb cake I've ever tasted. They gave us the recipe too, so I'll be sure to share! I'm really excited for the season to get underway. There's just something about food fresh from the ground that is so much more satisfying than food from the store. Tonight, I think we're going to have pork chops cooked with some onions and dill! I can't wait!
If you'd like to find a CSA near you, try
Local Harvest. It's like an online classified listing of CSAs and Farmer's Markets around the country. That's how I found our CSA and I'm so glad I did!
