Make a Splash at your Library!

So, did you miss me?! Sorry about the absence. Summer is crazy busy for me, this year more than most, and I just didn't have time to blog. Summer Reading Program is sort of an all consuming thing and I while I had loads of fun, I was also very busy! But now that my programming has come to a close, I thought I would share with you how I spent my summer!

The theme this year was Make a Splash READ! So I decorated our meeting room like a big aquarium, with wavy seaweeed dancing against the walls and fish swimming along the ceiling and a colorful coral reef on the piano. The kids loved it and I had a blast making all the decor.

The fish are made from paper plates. They are super easy and fun to make. I had a few kids stop down the day I was making decorations, so we whipped out 25 or so in just a few hours. In this corner, you can see a few fish being tempted by a worm on a hook hanging from the ceiling, and you can also get a closer look at our flowery coral reef.

Here is a close up of some of the fish. All you need to do is cut out a triangle from the edge of the plate to serve as the mouth and then glue or tape that triangle to the back of the fish for a tail. Then you can color your fish however you like. You can also add decorations like sequins, feathers, google eyes, etc to make your fish really stand out!

I also made some larger creatures to hang out with the kids. I'm pretty sure this octopus was taller than some of the kids in my program! He's made from two pieces of poster board taped together horizontally and then painted with orange, pink and red. I then drew the octopus out with oil pastels and did the shading with the oil pastels as well. Then I cut him out and hung him up. He's pretty much my favorite thing ever and I really don't want to take him down. I have visions of dressing him for different holidays, but we'll see how long that lasts. I might at least move him to my big bulletin board, so the room can go back to mostly normal.

Speaking of my big bulletin board, this melancholy turtle has been swimming around on it for the last few weeks. I'm not sure why he's so down. I didn't intend for him to be, but that's just how he feels, I guess. Personally, I think swimming about in a room full of kids, getting to listen to stories, munch popcorn and make awesome crafts is a pretty good gig, but it must not be his thing.
